Queensland Government hits your wallet with changes to the Electricity Supply Act

Have you noticed your Electricity Bill is no longer coming from Energex the Queensland Government agency rather a new company called Origin

Surely you would have noticed the brown recycled envelope which contains your invoice ... you do!  have you realised that you are paying more for your Electricity as a result of this change

Here is the story

We had part time University student and former student of John Paul College call into the radio station yesterday (Wednesday 3rd Dec 08) who works part time for AGL (Australian Gas and Light) who brought our attention to the following.

Up to the end of June 2008 you received your power bill from Energex then from the 1st July the Queensland Government made Energex a wholesaler and they gave the retail sales to a new business called Origin now if you go and check your power bills you would have found your power bill has risen to peak rate of 14.8100 per kilowatt hour and off peak 6.0400 per kilowatt hour

Now then AGL has come into the retail market and is offering 5 % off the kilowatt hours so you will pay 14.0695 per kilowatt hour and 5.738 per kilowatt hour now to get this offer you sign for 2 years there is no change over costs and your A$80.00 deposit simply rolls over

If you wish to break the contract you pay A$75.00 for what its worth AGL throw in A$50.00 voucher that you can spend at an AGL showroom

Now if they knock on your door as a door to door sales person they will produce photo identification and wear an AGL uniform if you agree to sign there and then they will do the contract then they ring through to their office where you will speak with a human (fancy that) they record your answers to their questions.

You will receive your invoice from Origin to the end of the current quarter before the AGL price structure takes over..... so be prepared for that as its Energex who reads your power meter and invoices Origin or AGL or anyone else who wants to be an retail provider and they in turn invoice you every 3 months.

Under the Electricity Act should Queensland Government change the wholesale price structure then both Origin and AGL will adjust their invoice to you / us accordingly.

Under the door to door canvassing Act you have 10 days to break the contract, AGL provide you with the break out form in their little hand out and there is no costs or fees provided it's done within the time frame.

For you folks over 60 .. you can apply for a seniors card from the Queensland Government and you can get further reduction on your power bill as well as a reduction in your ambulance levy.

And for those of you who are already on AGL because you have your gas with them check your power bill and if its showing a peak rate of 14.8100 per kilowatt hour and off peak 6.0400 per kilowatt hour then you ring Origin and ask what they can do.

If your rates are lower its because you are a) on centre link payments or b) seniors card but you can still get the 5 %

When Origin rang me and said if i was prepared to sign with Origin for 12 months they would reduce my bill by 5 % and i said considering Queensland Government made you the default supplier you get a free kick so why don't you just reduce it... sorry can't do that you have to sign for 12 months (on your bike mate)

Or if you are with AGL you can ring them and say that Origin have just approached me with an offer of 5 % can you match it

So you do have a choice albeit 5% ..... that's my xmas present to you all

You do have to laugh, puts a new turn on the phrase "Knowledge is Power"
