Byron Bay
So what makes it sacred, well it could be it's history of whaling, the wild goats found around the lighthouse, the dolphins that frequent the area, the simple walk along the beach or perhaps it was the sharks that came to feed on the effluent produced by the old FJ Walker meatworks (now since ceased)
or it could be the surfers who have made Byron Bay their mecca. This is a place where you could be guaranteed a wave in some form, depending on the tide and whether the wind was off shore or an on shore breeze you could get a wave break that went left or right.
In my opinion the real secret as to why people are attracted to Byron Bay, comes down to three key elements.
a) Once you get there, you don't have to travel vast distances to go some where, it's all laid out on a postage stamp. b) Your nostrils and lungs get to smell the sea and country air, and pollen from the flowering trees, plants. c) And then it's your eyes they are bedazzled and bathed in colour, your senses take in the emerald green sea, the white sands, green pastures and this wonderful montage is woven together by the blue sky, puffy white clouds and a bright yellow / orange orb called the Sun.
Byron Bay is a place where you park the car and you walk everywhere, there is a plethora of restaurants, eateries, takeways to suit all tastes. Healing Centres abound everywhere filled with different ascents, there's even one at the local surf club (photo above left) and life wouldn't be the same with out the Hari Krishna's popping in and walking through town vocalising the chant to Hari Krishna.(photo above right). Sacred, well I have to say it has a new meaning in Byron Bay, it's about tolerance, it's about acceptance, it's about freedom, it's about a love between our brothers and sisters, all over this land.
