Whale Watching
Fundraiser for Sea Sheppard

To begin with, one of my musical colleagues Raymond G Oliver sent me a flyer.
Gold Coasters will be doing their part to save the gentle giants of the ocean on Sunday 23rd September when they hold the annual Whale Protection Day.
For one day only all whale watching enthusiasts can travel on a half day whale watching cruise for the discounted amount of $50 with proceeds raised going to Sea Shepherd and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
To play your part, book tickets today with any of the Gold Coast Whale Watch & Conservation Association members. (see picture)

Within 2 days we rounded up a group of Whale Watchers, the concept of just driving 30 minutes from home to the Gold Coast  to experience Whales rather than the one night / two day stay in Hervey Bay was a considerable  influence in our decision to snap up this Gold Coast voyage of discovery.

Our vessel left the Nara resort (Southport Spit) at 9 am, out across the Gold Coast Broadwater through the Southport Spit and into the Pacific Ocean, leaving the Gold Coast skyline in the distance, within 10 minutes we had "Whales"  (if any one had seen the Star Trek movie "The voyage home" where they went back in time to get humpback whales, you would remember Scotty saying "Captain, They'll be Whales on Board" that's the experience we all felt when mum, dad and junior turned up alongside our big catamaran).

Now might be a good idea to point out that it was a beautiful blue sky, sun was out (naturally, well you are in Queensland) but we had a big swell, one and half metres I would suggest and people on top deck got bounced about, they got sea sick, best place is the centre of gravity, bottom deck.

So for us sea salts we took the photos and did the oooohs and aaaahs and milked it for all its worth while our friends were feeding the fishes or filling the paper bags.

The climax was heading back in just after 11 am hundreds of dolphins came whooshing through the water, like the charge of the light brigade across the crest of waves they came, around us and under us, it was spectacular and ended the day on a high note.

On the way home, you guessed it we stopped off and got the Yatala apple and apricot family size pies with fresh cream and rang home to get the kettle on for that cuppa tea, earl grey of course.

Great tour, would do it again in 2008
